Chanel – Recreating the Memories

In this Spring-Summer 2022 Ready-to-Wear Collection, Chanel is searching for a new perspective of past memories. Virginie Viard said: “Karl Lagerfeld used to photograph the CHANEL campaigns himself. Today, I call upon photographers. I love the way that they see CHANEL. It supports and inspires me.”

Photography plays a key role in this collection to express inspiration. Five films are released featuring Lily-Rose Depp, Alma Jodorowsky, JENNIE, Rebecca Dayan and Quannah Chasinghorse-Potts, all repeating the same gesture, with a camera in hand. To Viard, this gesture evokes lots of memories. Back in the eighties, the runway was full of sounds of flashbulbs, this type of vintage atmosphere is what Chanel is recapturing in this season.

Styles come out in a diverse way, short dresses, fishnet skirts and multicolour jackets, etc. On the other hand, the print is another main focus of this season, for example, colourful butterfly wings on black chiffon is a classic, as well as accessories like flared heels. According to Viard, these are “something romantic”, a sense of mystery is found in the memory trace in this season’s Chanel.
